Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is a survival sim set in very unusual settings. In most games of this genre, a person in trouble is forced to adapt to the wild and invent anew ways to get food, fire and water, invent weapons and clothes from improvised means, again prove in every possible way that man is the king of nature. It's different in this game. The player will have to invent for the first time everything that our ancestors had, because the action takes place in Africa of the Neogene period, long before our days. This is a beautiful and violent world, but at the same time merciless and cruel. To survive in it, you need to evolve.

The player controls a member of the primate clan and must monitor his condition in every possible way, hunger, thirst and fatigue. In the African jungle of that time, there are many different dangers, including African pythons, saber-toothed tigers, giant boars, crocodiles, hyenas, giant otters, African buffaloes and others. You can use natural dexterity and climb any tree in the jungle, but if the player breaks, he will break all his bones. While exploring new locations or escaping from predators, the player character falls into a state of fear, which can be overcome if you find glowing balls, otherwise the stage of hysteria will come. Also, the monkeys can use their heightened senses to pick up different sounds - predators, lost members of the community, or an outsider who wants to join.
As new discoveries are made, primates become more intelligent and capable, and begin to use new skills - they create bedding from leaves or use medicinal herbs for healing. If a player dies, then a new member of the community is under his control. In the event of the death of all members of the community, the pedigree ends and the game must be restarted. The goal of the game is to ensure the survival of the primate clan, which through evolution becomes a completely new species. As the clan grows, the player can control different primates - children, adults, elderly and mothers. The clan develops and the player can make social interactions, such as calling clan members to hunt, explore, or migrate to a new habitat. While sleeping, players can unlock new skills by developing a neural system that replaces the skill tree.
